this is a brazilian film ( albeit a documentary ) rather than a tv program about
kidnapping in rio de janiro/sau paulo ( i can't remember which ). either way i
saw it a while back and its very good. highly recommended.

i also saw it a while back, i should add that this film is mostly in english,
with the occasional subtitled part. also highly recommended by myself.

some highlights include interviews with a kidnapper, a plastic surgeon who made
a life out of ear replacements, and business people who travel in the skies to
avoid having to go on the ground at street level.

information

brazil is known for its beautiful beaches lush rain forests and vibrant culture.
however in recent years the country has developed more of a reputation for
corrupt politicians kidnapping and plastic surgery. manda bala (send a bullet)
artfully connects these seemingly disparate elements and conducts a dazzling yet
harrowing examination of the tragic domino effect that has reshaped the face of
the country and created an entire industry built on corruption.

featuring a stylish score and articulate interviews with kidnappers, kidnap
victims, and the people who profit off them, jason kohn s award-winning
documentary illustrates how corruption and kidnapping represent two sides of the
same violent crime: the rich steal from the poor while the poor steal the rich.

i hate it that all the brazilian movies (or movies about brazil) that get attention are about violence and
poverty. it makes people think that the country is all like that.
i knew a bunch of foreigners that thought that in brazil there were wild animals on the street (see the
simpsons episode in rio) and that we have sex all the time with everyone (ok... that would be nice,
actually).
i'm still waiting for some movie, documentary, tv show, that shows brazil as it is, with it's downs and
specially with it's ups. (showing the carnaval and soccer does not count ;p)

[/ranting]

ps.: the translation of the title if this doc is terrible. "manda bala" it's something like shoot 'em up.
actually, manda bala was the brazilian title of that movie with clive owen and monica belluci. =d

brazil = criminality (drugs and corrupty) + lawless jungles (even stone jungles)
+ bad quality porngraphy (with real prostitutes, not actress) + religious
control (vengance, madness, angry)

do not spect a brazilian movie to be other than that. they really don't know
what that means.

g'day edukf,

don't be so sensitive. shows like the simpsons, south park, etc, always
charicature stereotypes. according to these shows, my country of australia has
kangaroos running down the streets, everyone has a koala for a pet, and all
aussies live in the outback wrestling crocodiles for fun.

on ya cobber, you little beaudy!

harry,
so this isn't true?

;p

i'm saying in general. the simpsons we're just a bad example.
i was just making a point for the ones who aren't used to that and get their geographic knowledge from
these kind of flicks. they are many.

cheers, mate.
