dl and instal core avc and haali/matroska media spliter
also depending on what video card u have (nvidia or ati) u can get avivo or
purevideo -this is optional but it helps reduce the cpu usage
vlc player is not a good idea for .mkv files because it's using a lot more cpu
then core avc

here's some programs i've been using (also a message i've been posting in the
past).
with vlc i couldn't get it to play more then a couple frames, with tcpmp i can
get 34fps on benchmark test for 1.07gb 720p x264's

how to play
- easy way
h**p://www.mytempdir.com/1135981 this version of tcpmp player
just extract to some folder and its good to go
but only plays stereo audio, does not go out of sync

- slight work needed way
coreavc 1.1.0.5 (don't think i can post the link for that)
use mpc classic with coreavc. coreavc is not always as easy as tcpmp because you
have to disable ffdshow h264 filter if thats installed, and make coreavc the
preferred external filter. then it works great like tcpmp.
h**p://img116.imageshack.us/img116/4054/howtosetupcoreavcel3.jpg - detailed
instructions.
h**p://img70.imageshack.us/img70/2459/howtosetupcoreavc2jw8.jpg - set coreavc
as preferred (if needed)
- if you use a slow computer then it could go out of sync because it wants to
play every frame even if that means playing lower then the original fps. try
unchecked "lock back-buffer before presenting" in options >> playback >> output
if sync issues occur

on this note whats the best *nix player for mkv files.
im running ubunutu edgy with xgl and newest ati drivers if that makes a diff?

media player classic (comes with k-lite codec pack) worked fine for me on both
a p4 3ghz desktop and a pm 1.6 notebook, with seek functions fine - with no
discernable notice/loss in performance

vlc does stuff up though, and standard wmp doesn't like em one bit
