avi and mp4 are just file containers, and they have nothing to do with video quality or speed. for example, xvid and divx are similar technology that's wrapped within the avi container. and nero digital and apple's formats are usually in mp4. the key of performance is the file formats in these file containers. h.264/x.264/nero digital are mpeg4 part 10, a newer mpeg4 technology, and they are better than xvid/divx in quality, which is based on mpeg4 part 2. |

download the avi like 99% of the people have to do since so many of the players out there won't play mp4 |

ok, i'm not really up on the technical differences between .avi and 264/.mp4 etc. i have noticed a better looking picture with the last 264/.mp4 i downloaded, but the audio seemed just slightly out of sync or something - hard to pin it down, but it seemed off. i copy to a portable hd and play via wdtv live plus media player. it works great. my concern is that at the end of the season, i will burn the season to dvd to archive. question: will the dvd play on my samsung or lg dvd player on my tv? i'm all for improvement as long as i don't have to go out and buy new gear to watch it with. thanks to all our uploaders! |

which wouldn't be so bad if you could play them on something other than a computer. xvid is still king of the hill as it plays on just about any hardware, while these crappy mp4's play on just about nothing. so tell me again how much better the mp4's are. all of the evidence shows that it isn't. |
