well i for one, as a very long time doctor who fan, will not be flaming you.
this actually fantastic news. the fact that actors change in the role is par
for the course with the series. the biggest worry always being if the new guy
can fill in the shoes of the guy before - especially if the doctor he is
replacing was an exceptional doctor.

at the series beginning, back in 1963, they were lucky enough to get four
fantastic actors back to back. as each actor came and went, you really hated to
see them go. but then the next guy would come along and do one better. which
once again seems to be the case with the current serial. so far they are 0 and
2, and from the looks to things, they are looking to score again if the rumors
are true. as you were quick to notice, nesbitt is a fantastic actor.

the only other big worry surrounding the show is whether the production heads
have their heads in the right place. making the transition from one team to the
next, has not always been the easiest things in doctor who history. however,
since the new serial began, i have become increasingly impressed with moffat;
the guy literally has turned out some of the best episodes in the 40 year
history of the show, over the past three years. if nothing else, he certainly
has a handle on how to tell a who story. and if his work on jekyll is any
indication of how he works behind the scenes of a program, then i think we have
a winner.

all in all, considering how some past transitions of doctor who have gone
horribly wrong, this one, if true, looks to have everything in place to take the
program to even higher heights. and no doubt, davies and tennant are going to
leave the program, going out with a bang and a blaze of glory. season four
should be the best yet as we build up to the transition point, which i assume
will be the xmas special for 2008.

if steven moffat takes russell's post and, as invader phlegm pointed out, the
transition goes well doctor who can only get better. steven's episodes have all
been among my favorites of the new series and i love the suspense he builds. i
only wonder what will happen to torchwood - it may not be up to doctor who specs
but i kind of miss it with all it's very flawed and troubled characters.

as for the changing of the doctors, i'll be frank, i've loved all of the doctors
so i'll welcome the change.

since i only know nesbitt from jekyll, maybe i don't know him well enough yet,
but in my opinion i'm not sure i like this. nesbitt was great in jekyll, but he
was way too dark to be the new doctor. i can't see his doctor being the same
zany carefree person that we expect him to be.

just my opinion, maybe i'm wrong.

i think that he would be a great choice for a new doctor (if the rumours are
true - sadly it would put in doubt any continuance of jekyll though). i would
even welcome a doctor who sees life a little more darkly - it would be an
interesting twist - time will tell. james nesbitt has acted in a wide variety of
shows ranging from dramadies to darker shows like jekyll. i have no doubt that
he could turn his hat to this show as well.

they're turning over the doctors way too quickly.

christopher eccleston was very good. plus he's sexy and that's coming from a
straight guy. he should have stayed for at least one more season.

david tennant is also good though it took a little getting used to. but then
that's par for the course with doctor who so no big deal there. now that he's
been in the role for a while and it seems he's doing well at it it doesn't make
much sense to change him up so quickly.

how many seasons did tom baker do again? i mean come on, he was there so long
they had the chance to totally change up the intro! (which by the way was a
sucky change but that's an old argument)

isn't the doctor limited to twelve regenerations? what happens when they reach
#12 with the "new" series? i admit i never did see the end of the "old" doctor
who though so if i missed something important just say so and i'll go catch up.

as pointed out in the subsequent news item, the story re james nesbitt as the
doctor is being reported as being bogus - about what you'd expect from the sun
considering they have established quite the rep for fabricating stories,
especially in relation to doctor who.

in relation to the 12 regeneration limit i'm sure it'd be easy enough to work
around that - could even say that his merger with the heart of the tardis "reset
the clock" so to speak; he just doesn't realise it yet.
when the limit was first written into the storyline the writers probably never
thought the show would last long enough to go through that many regenerations -
they didn't consider the turnover the role would have toward the end of the old
series and start of the new one.

if you didn't watch the last series then you have missed that the timelord can only regenerate bye himself
a set number of times but the time lord race can regenerate another time lord when ever they like.
but in the doctors time line they are all dead and crossing his own time line will destroy the universe.
which rose nearly did do in the first series by saving her dad. big no no.
