i totally disagree. fantastic show, wish it would've stayed on.

absolutely. i don't think the showed failed because they 'took themselves too
seriously'. i think the showed failed because it was too intelligent. i also
doubt that sunday was a good time frame for it. it was witty, fast paced, and
well written. i do also think that many potential viewers might have been
turned off the first weeks by its very strong anti-religious push. not enough
patience for the story development.

the things mentioned above i didn't really mind.

what made the show fall flat for me was the automatic assumption that i should
care deeply and emotionally about the mechanics of how to run a really,
*really* shitty little comedy show.
honestly - why would anyone who doesn't actually work backstage at saturday
night live give a flying fuck ?
talk about excessively narrowing your audience.

the reason is, because the characters are human beings. it wouldn't have
mattered if they were running a corner bakery shop, we'd still care about them
because they were well written characters.

talk about excessively narrowing your mind, maybe?

i loved this show, simply because it was something different from what we've
seen before. there are elements of both the west wing and the excellent sports
night in it, but it did shake up the character developments a lot. and it wasn't
that you had to be interested in the mechanics behind a show like snl, it was
just interesting to see the way corporate affairs interfere in a show thats
supposed to be for entertainment, and also it allows the producers etc. to mock
this era of political correctness gone too far. its internal politics, mixed in
with the last couple of episodes that are directly linked to politics, were
massively clever, and also gave the show a sense of, for want of a better word,
reality.

the fact is, this was a witty, intelligent, and quite funny show that didn't get
the run out it deserved, and had such a huge scope for development. i guess
we'll just have to wait for the next aaron sorkin dramedy to get a glimpse of
something this good.

oh, and p.s., before this, living in the uk, i had never ever seen an episode of
snl, but that didn't mean that just because it was loosely based on this, it
narrowed its audience.

i agree, i also live in the uk and whilst i've heard of snl i've never
actually seen it. that didn't matter at all though the scripting and cast
were superb and made the show for me, i liked the parallels to many of the
current political issues as well.

didn't get a long enough run, its a real shame it got axed.

i think you're reading too much into what this show was about.

it's just a drama with a twist of comedy.. not the haha kind but the
intelligent humor kind. whatever sorkin's intention, is his own and
speculation is just that.. speculation.

i liked the show, but i can see where d.l. hughley is coming
from. its nice to
see a celebrity speaking his mind and giving his real opinion for a change.

he was well-cast for his character.

seriously, it's not like anyone didn't see it coming. studio 60 was the show
that kept
hanging on. i remember everyone wondering if it would come back after christmas,
wondering if sorkin would see the criticisms and pull the show around, and after
the show was pulled again, people were still going, "second season?" i'm just
surprised that it held out as long as it did. i guess nbc kept trying to squeeze
any money out of it they could, seeing how it cost so damn much to make. imho,
it was dead in the water in october, and i remember watching the first new show
after the holiday break to see if it had changed and knowing in january that
this wasn't coming back.
